Mead
and Freud’s theories of socialization are similar in seeing our self-identity
as a social creation. However, they differ in that Freud sees socialization as
incomplete and full of tension between one’s inner needs and the social world.
Mead and Cooley see socialization as a conflict-free unity of inner needs and
social norms – humans willingly conform. Using examples from the text, and the
film, who is more on target, Mead & Cooley or Freud, in explaining how the
media (as a socialization agent) informs our identity. Why?
