ELM 530 Topic 2:
Discussion Question 1
As a teacher, how would you use
standards in terms of creating a rubric? How does this help in analyzing an
assessment?
ELM 530 Topic 2: Discussion Question 2
Author Rick Wormeli describes a “working
definition of mastery” in the following way:
Students have mastered content when they
demonstrate a thorough understanding as evidenced by doing something
substantive with the content beyond merely echoing
it. Anyone can repeat information; it’s the masterful student who can break
content into its component pieces, explain it and alternative perspectives
regarding it cogently to others, and use it purposefully in new situations.
How can
assessment planning help teachers guide students toward mastery in the way
Wormeli describes?
ELM 530 Week 2 Assignment
Deconstructing Assessment Items
Details:
Review “Sample Arizona AIMS Exam
Questions.” This contains seven assessment items for
fourth-graders from the standardized Arizona AIMS exam. Complete this
assignment in three parts:
1. Complete
a “Table of Specifications” using the table format provided. Begin by analyzing
each of the seven assessment items. For each item, create a learning objective aligned to what the assessment item is
measuring. Write these learning objectives in the first column under “Learning
Objectives.” Then, for each assessment item, classify the item, indicating its
type (e.g., multiple choice, essay) under the level
of knowledge/skill the student is being asked to display in the item.
2. Review
each assessment item for cultural bias (e.g., ethnic, gender, or socioeconomic
bias). Write a short description of your review beneath your Table of
Specifications.
3. Lastly, create new assessment items for each of the original seven
assessment items using a different Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Level than what was
originally required. Be sure your new assessment item aligns to the learning
objective you wrote, or, if you prefer, re-write the
learning objective slightly to more accurately reflect your new assessment.
Include the learning objectives, the new assessment items, and their Depth of
Knowledge (DOK) Level classification beneath the statement of bias.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
You are not required to submit this
assignment to Turnitin.

Review “Comprehensive Assessment Plan
Benchmark Assessment and Rubric” in preparation
for completing the Benchmark Assessment. All coursework will inform this
assignment.
Comprehensive Assessment
Plan
Use the “Class Profile” and select a
grade level (1-8) for the class. Next, select English Language Arts or Mathematics as the content area you will be working
with for this assignment. Based on the grade and content area you selected,
choose a Common Core strand, cluster, and set of standards. From this
information, you will create a comprehensive assessment
plan.
In creating the assessment plan, include
an introduction that provides a short summary
of a unit of study to contextualize your assessments. Include:
1. Learning
targets/objectives that are aligned with your standards and consistent with the
unit of study you have summarized.
2. Academic
language for the unit of study, including key vocabulary, form, and function.
3. An
informal, formative pre-assessment.
In addition, provide a table of
specifications using either the DOK model or Bloom’s Taxonomy model.
Consistent and aligned with these items,
create a summative assessment that consists of:
1. Directions
for the student.
2. Three
short answer response items that require the use of varied cognitive skills.
3. Fifteen
multiple choice questions that require the use of
varied cognitive skills.
4. One
restricted response essay that requires extended or critical thinking.
5. Modified
short answer response items and multiple choice items for a student on an IEP
related to a learning disability.
Next, create the following to accompany your summative assessment:
1. An
analytic scoring guide for the restricted response essay that describes the
criteria and features to be scored.
2. An
answer key that includes answers for the short answer responses, answers for
the multiple choice questions with explanations for
each option, and a sample answer for the extended response essay.
3. A
separate answer key for the assessment items that were modified for the student
on the IEP.
