Week 1: Academic
Integrity
Introduction
Character is doing the
right thing when nobody's looking. There are too many people who think
that the only thing that's right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong
is to get caught.

Personal integrity is
where academic integrity begins, but not everyone considers "right"
and "wrong" in their daily lives. Consider what you would do in
either of the following scenarios:
Scenario 1: You
arrive at a crowded movie theater with your young daughter. You see that
children under the age of 5 are admitted for half price. You're sure that your
child can pass for a 4-year-old even though she celebrated her 5th birthday a
couple of months ago. Do you try to have her admitted for half price? Or do you
pay full price?
Scenario
2: You're tired. It's late at night. You're reading a fairly obscure book,
one that your instructor is likely unfamiliar with. You are seized with the
temptation to copy a paragraph or two from the book, if not word for word, then
nearly so. Do you give in to temptation?
What is the right
thing to do? What are the consequences? Will your decision have more far
reaching effects than simply getting a cheap movie ticket or finishing your
schoolwork?
This week, you will
learn more about what exactly constitutes academic integrity and why it is an
important issue for you and Walden University.

Academic Integrity is very important at Walden
University. Everybody looks at ethical behavior differently but Walden
makes sure that violations of academic integrity don't happen. (Walden
writing center, 2012)
Everyone who comes to Walden agrees to respect
the code of conduct. Student's work is checked often
by turnitin for plagiarism.
Plagiarism can happen in several forms. Lack
of citations and incorrect paraphrasing are two of them. Students can avoid
plagiarism by following rules of the APA. (Walden University Student Handbook,
2012)
Walden thinks that academic integrity is very
important for every students intellectual growth. The university hopes that
students will contact their faculty mentor, course instructor or academic
advisor, if they have any questions or concerns. (Walden University Student
Handbook, 2012)
