week 1
Present an example of a business situation that you believe would lend itself to the use of a quantitative business model. Clearly explain how the model could be used in this situation.
grand canyon
2
Multiple models are often used in supporting business decision making. Why might this be the case and what factors may dictate the need for multiple models?

week 2
Which business functions are more likely to use decision analysis models than others, and why?

What are some inherent challenges in using decision trees effectively in today's organizations? How can these challenges be overcome?

week 3

What types of business situations or problems might best lend themselves to simple linear regression and what types may not? Why and why not?

A health researcher is interested in determining whether or not the speed at which people walk is related to their cholesterol levels. He picks 100 adult volunteers at random, checks their cholesterol levels, and then times each one while they walk a stretch of 100 yards. He is amazed at the results: a simple regression between the walk times and the cholesterol levels has an R2 of 0.98 and the slope of the regression line is 0.7. Would he be justified in concluding that walking slowly may cause high cholesterol or that high cholesterol may affect walking speed? Discuss why or why not.

week 4
What types of business situations or problems might best lend themselves to multiple linear regression? What types may not? Explain.

Give an example based on your experience of a situation in which using a multiple regression model or non-linear regression model may have helped you make a better decision.

week 5
Discuss the strategic importance of forecasting. What strategic decisions do organizations need to make in terms of forecasting? What are some examples?

Refer to "Forecasting Practices in U.S. Corporations: Survey Results." Which point was most interesting and why?

week 6
Which business functions are more likely to use optimization models than others and why?

Using the GCU Library and/or Internet resources, find an example of a linear optimization model used in industry. Describe which industry it is or was used in and briefly discuss the problem or challenge it addressed.

week 7

Provide one example each of a workforce scheduling, a blending, and a logistics linear optimization problem not discussed in the the textbook. What is being optimized in each of your examples and why

Explain the importance of correctly stating the objective function and constraints in linear optimization problems. Provide a few examples of the problems that could result if the objective function and constraints are not stated properly. Why would these problems arise?

week 8

What key factors of a business situation indicate the need for simulation (versus the other modeling techniques covered in the course)?
Describe the key differences between simulation models and the models covered in previous modules, not only from the perspective of their applications, but also from the perspective of computing/solving the models.

week 1

Details:
Refer to "Competing on Analytics."
Write an essay of 1,500-2,000 words that addresses the following:
  1. How can a company become and prosper as an analytics competitor?
  2. What are the sources of strength for an analytics competitor?
  3. How has this article influenced your views about quantitative business modeling and its utility in business decision making?
  4. Do your views conform with, conflict with, or supplement the views you may have formulated after completing the other readings? Develop your response from an ethical perspective and be sure to incorporate a Christian worldview, or other faith tradition, as applicable into your response.
  5. The following link from the GCU Vision and Mission Statement may be helpful in formulating your responses:http://www.gcu.edu/About-Us/Mission-and-Vision.php
Prepare the assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

week 2

Due Date: Sep 24, 2014 23:59:59 Max Points:100

Details:
Complete Problem 3-17 (respond based on maximum criteria).
Complete Problem 3-19, parts a and b (respond based on EMV criteria).
Complete Problem 3-22.
Use an Excel spreadsheet file for the calculations and explanations, with one worksheet per problem. Use the problem number for each worksheet name. Cells should contain the formulas (i.e., if a formula was used to calculate the entry in that cell).
You are not required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.
week 3

Details:
Complete Problems 4-13, 4-14, 4-15, and 4-19.
Use Excel's regression option to perform the regression.
Use an Excel spreadsheet file for the calculations and explanations, with one worksheet per problem. Use the problem number for each worksheet name. Cells should contain the formulas (i.e., if a formula was used to calculate the entry in that cell).
Note: If you have access only to an Apple computer for your homework assignments, please contact your instructor for additional instructions.
You are not required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.

week 4
\
Details:
Complete Problems 4-22 and 4-23.
Complete Problem 4-24. In addition to the questions in this problem, respond to the following:
  1. State the linear equation.
  2. Explain the overall statistical significance of the model.
  3. Explain the statistical significance for each independent variable in the model
  4. Interpret the Adjusted R2.
  5. Is this a good predictive equation(s)? Which variables should be excluded (if any) and why? Explain.
Complete Problem 4-30.
Use Excel's regression option to perform the regression. Use one Excel spreadsheet file for the calculations and explanations, with one worksheet per problem. Use the problem number for each worksheet name. Cells should contain the formulas (i.e., if a formula was used to calculate the entry in that cell).
